Water for Life – Projects in Uganda
At the start of 2011, a mission team from Charlotte-based Sports Outreach International (SOI) headed to Uganda. In all, 32 members were separated into three teams: Sports, Construction, and Medical. Together, they positively impacted the lives of people in this impoverished country.
For more than 25 years, Northern Uganda has been the primary focus of SOI, specifically the city of Gulu. As stated by Aloysius Kyazze, director of SOI in Gulu, the vision for the people of Northern Uganda is to tell them about Jesus Christ in a way they understand and can apply to daily life. SOI wants these people to see that through the love and compassion of Christ, spiritual, physical, emotional, and psychological restoration is possible.
By handing out lifesaving water filters, the people of Gulu have been blessed. However, the selfless people with the Water for Life Ministry have played a huge role by investing in and serving the Kingdom of God.
For over 20 years, the northern regions of Uganda have been shaken to their core by civil war. While in Gulu for two days, we noticed that a single spring that ran continually into muddy ditches was the sole water source, the same source from which adults and children were drinking.
After assembling water kits in Kampala, they were handed out to the people of Gulu. With safe drinking water, countless people are being saved from illness or death. The dirty water in Uganda is dangerous for everyone; this bacteria and parasite ridden water is potentially deadly for children.
Now, safe drinking water will be provided to the people of Northern Uganda, as well as their livestock. Clean water will also bolster farming, sports, and vocational training. By partnering with Uganda churches and various mission organizations, the needs of people in Gulu are being met.
During the first half of 2011, Water for Life’s strategy consisted of creating partnerships with as many mission organizations possible. As part of this, mission teams were supplied with Sawyer water filters. From there, feedback as to the number of filters that each of those organizations could deploy around the world was gathered for the second half of the year.
Today, Water for Life is doing everything possible to raise funds so even more mission organizations can be supplied with lifesaving water filter kits. As a result, the lives of adults and children are being saved!
